Sequential and Concurrent Events (Ages 5-8)

In this activity we’ll be learning about sequential and concurrent events. We’ll learn what they are, the difference between them, and how you can use them in Blockly. By the end of the activity, you’ll be able to control your KINI using both types of events!

Before we begin:

  1. Make sure that you have your KINI robot, and that it is connected to the internet. KINI App Game Tab

  2. Open the app, and go to the Blockly tab by clicking the Blockly button in the bottom right corner. We will be using the two Repeat blocks to create our code.

  3. Understand the basics of Blockly - if you don’t I’d suggest checking out the “Introduction to Blockly” activity before this one.

Sequential Events:

  • Sequential events are a set of instructions that happen one at a time

  • In the example below, KINI will first move forward for 1 second, then rotate left for 1 second, then finally move backwards for 1 second

  • These are sequential events, as they happen in order, and one at a time

Sequential event blocks are shown in the repeat once block. They happen one at a time, and instruct Kini to first move forward for one second, the rotate left for one second, then lastly move backwards for one second.

Concurrent Events:

  • Concurrent events are the opposite of sequential events; they are two or more actions that are happening at the same time

  • In the example below, as KINI is moving, it’s light is changing colour. As these happen at the same time, they are concurrent events.

In Blockly, the same action code is used from before, but at the same time Kini's colours are changing in the repeat forever block.
